Summer Activities for You and Your Grandkids

If you have grandkids, you’re likely looking forward to spending some time with them. Read on to explore some of the activities that you can enjoy with your grandkids this summer.

Family Movie Night

Instead of going to the cinema, you could opt to watch a movie at your home as a family. You just need to choose a suitable movie that the whole family will enjoy—many popular streaming services have a wide variety of family favorites. And don’t forget the tasty treats! If eating popcorn is difficult due to dentures, opt for some alternatives such as chocolate.

Take your family movie night up a notch by moving it outside! Hang a white bedsheet on a wall outside and create a big-screen experience with a projector for a truly memorable experience.

Host a Family Dance Party

Regardless of how old your grandkids are, they won’t lack the energy needed to enjoy a family dance party. This is also a great way to introduce your grandkids to a wide variety of music, including your own favorites! You can even invite other people to join in the fun using Zoom, and dance together. Who cares if you have two left feet? The main focus is on making memories together with your loved ones.

Take Part in a Water Fight

Water balloons and squirt guns are a great way to cool off in the summertime. Don’t be afraid to join in the fun! If the water from the garden hose is a bit too cold, consider using cool tap water from inside the house instead.

Grow Flowers and Herbs Together

Planting flowers and herbs together is a great way to spend time and connect with your grandkids. And every time you walk past the plant later, you’ll be reminded of the fun you had! Go big with an elaborate flower bed or garden, or keep it simple with a window box. No space outside? Many herbs can be grown indoors in small plant pots! Try planting herbs that have useful benefits, like lavender, mint, or basil.

Track Down and Share Family Recipes

Food is often a central component of family traditions, and recipes are a great way to keep those traditions alive across the generations! Recruit your grandchildren’s help to track down family recipes—you may need to reach out to a relative or two—and put them together in a cookbook. Don’t forget to decorate it with photos, and include some information about your family history!

Host a Family Cooking Challenge

Once you’ve compiled all your favorite recipes, it’s time to host a cookoff! How else will you know whose potato salad is the best? And what’s the secret ingredient that someone adds to their cookies? Decide on what meal you’ll prepare, write out a shopping list, and let everyone get to work! And if cooking is becoming a difficult task for you, let your family do all the work—you get to be the judge!
