Seniors’ Guide to Staying Connected Through Facebook

In the current age of global connection, helping seniors stay in touch with family and friends is easier than ever. Facebook is a free and secure online platform that offers a convenient way to keep up with loved ones. Whether you are setting up an account for yourself or helping a loved one set up their online profile, we at Dellwood Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care compiled the basics to help walk you through some of the Facebook basics.

Setting Up Your Facebook Profile

All you need to begin your Facebook profile is an email address. Visit Facebook and click the “Create New Account” button. Enter your first and last name and email address, then select a password that allows access to your account. It is important to keep that password protected and not share it with others in order to keep your account safe.

Facebook will also ask for your gender and birthday information, but if you so choose, you can keep those private and they will not be shown on your Facebook page. Once you have completed the sign-up form, click “Sign Up” to activate your account.

Add a little personality to your profile with a photo of yourself. You can use a picture from your computer or phone, or you can ask a friend or family member to take one for you. This helps ensure that others who may want to connect with you know they have found the right person.

Facebook also has a lot of helpful resources to assist you including how-to guides so you can get the most out of the platform!

Connecting With Loved Ones

Now it’s time to get virtually connected with friends, family and colleagues. Use the search bar at the top of the page to type in the names of loved ones. When you visit their page, click on the “Add Friend” button. Your friend or family member will be sent a “request” to connect with you and once they approve that request, you will be able to see the full content on their page.

You may also receive friend requests from other Facebook users. You can choose who you get connected with by either accepting or declining those requests.

Once connected, you will be able to see pictures and posts from those in your friend circle, and they will be able to also see the pictures and posts you share. Plus, you can also connect to Dellwood Gardens on Facebook by visiting our page and clicking the “Like” button.

For seniors at Dellwood Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care, Facebook can be a fun and simple way to keep up with all the exciting things happening in loved ones’ lives.
